On the 26th May 1888, John Walter Rogers married Elizabeth Ann Hammersley at St. John the Baptist, Heaton Mersey, Lancashire, England. John Walter Rogers, 21, bachelor, coachman of Heaton Mersey, Lancashire, England, son of Edward Rogers (painter); and Elizabeth Ann Hammersley, 21, spinster, mantle maker of Barlow Moors, daughter of Thomas William Hammersley (sailor). Witnessed by John Springer and Sarah Springer [1] The witnesses were Sarah Elizabeth SPRINGER and John Leonard II SPRINGER children of Elizabeth Ann MANDELL (married to John Leonard I SPRINGER), the only surviving child of Sarah BARTON (1822-1877), who was the sister of Elizabeth Ann HAMMERSLEY's mother Amelia BARTON (c1828-1874). On all other records, from his baptism, through two marriages, births of children, and death, Elizabeth Ann HAMMERSLEY's father was recorded as William Thomas HAMMERSLEY (1832-1886). Though the wolhe family had a long association with the Royal Navy, he had not been a sailor since the 1860s.
