Biography

Victor was born in 1914. He passed away in 1979. [1][2]

He married Marion S. P. Welsh in Luton, Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom in 1936.[3] She died in 1971.

"VICTOR A. H. RANCE EXPRESSES SINCERE THANKS FOR GOOD WISHES RECEIVED DURING HIS RECENT INDISPOSITION"[4]

After he became a widower, he married Ruth. Her married name was Marion Ruth RANCE, according to the Electoral Roll. Neighbours knew her as Mrs Rance or Ruth. Ruth had been married before and had grown children and grandchildren from her first marriage. It is not currently known what her previous married surname was, or her maiden name, but it is believed that like Victor, she had been born in England.

"REVEREND VICTOR RANCE Mrs Ruth. Rance wishes to extend her sincere thanks to all students and friends of her late husband Victor, for their love arid kindness during Victor’s long illness, and following his death.' ’[5]

He was born in England and emigrated to Australia after World War 2.[6] He was living in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia for a time, then moved to Victoria. Victor would often be seen in the street with his walking stick, taking “Brutus”, a Boxer dog, for a walk.

“ The Rev. Victor Rance, Mrs. Rance and daughter Myrna, left last week on a month's vacation to tour the South-West by caravan.[7]

Victor became a Minister of the Congregational Church, later the Presbyterian Church.

In retirement he worked as an English coach/tutor:

CHRISTIAN VIEWPOINT

MINISTERS' FRATERNAL

(Contributed by Rev. Victor A. H Rance.)

There is usually a very distinct difference between the person we wish to be, and the person whom at heart we know ourselves to be. Long ago, the philosopher Sacrates wrote the following words. 'The surest as the shortest way to make yourself beloved and honoured, is to be indeed the very man you wish to appear. Set yourself therefore diligently to the attaining of every virtue, and you will find, on experience, that no one of them whatsoever but will flourish and I gain strengtn when properly exercised.' Most of us carry in our hearts the image of the person we would really like to be. The average man and woman wants to be good, generous and happy, of that I am sure. However, many have a very real dread of being thought 're-ligious,' I can never understand why, for the finest spirits of bygone generations have almost, without exception, been deeply religious, and the finest work, morally and socially has been carried out by the church. Most of us strive as we trave] along the road of life to acquire mental and moral poise and balance. By the way, poise has recently been described as 'the art of raising the eyebrows instead of raising the roof!' and that is just what most of us have tried to cultivate. But all too often we become bitterly disappointed with ourselves. We plan as we face each new day- to be broad and tolerant in our outlook, calm and collected in our attitude toward our fellows Then suddenly and without warning we find ourselves in an awkward and ugly mood, to use a good old Yorkshire term we 'put the cat among the .pigeons' and then feel heartily ashamed of ourselves Now why does this happen so often to so many of us? I think the answer is fairly obvious. Let us take a simple and homely illustration. No builder with any reputation would dream of starting to erect a house without first drawing up a plan, no dressmaker with any training worth having would set to work without securing a good pattern. Yet, in the far graver issues of real life and the building of character so many set about the job haphazardly, with no set plan; thus their days are carelessly frittered away, life becomes lack-lustre, dull and flat, and they have a constant feeling of frustration and bad humour.

Mankind needs an ideal pattern of life. Jesus very graciously supplies that pattern, and wise men and women try to be like Him. In closing I would remind you of a very wonderful speech that was made in . the British House of Commons in 1947 by Sir Stafford Cripps. Sir Stafford, who is a keen Christian and churchman said. 'I wish that to-day our country could refresh its heart and mine1 with a deep draught of that draught of that Christian faith! which has come down to us over | 2000 years, and has over those j centuries inspired the ' peoples of j Europe to fresh efforts and new hopes. It is that spirit and not our own material hopes and difficulties that can be the most potent source of our inspiration, call it lw what name you will, selfsacrifice, honour, love or comradeship It is the strongest power in our lives, and at this moment of great difficulty in our history we need its supporting strength as never before.' ”[11]
