Biography

Squire was born in 1840 in Cherry Valley, Ashtabula County, Ohio, the son of Abram Fitz Randolph and Abigail Day Wilcox. He grew up on the family farm in Cherry Valley and also started farming there. At age 24 in 1864, Squire married Phebe Augusta 'Gusta' Farnham. They had three children together. In 1870, Squire's parents were living with them. They must have had a falling-out with Squire since he was not named in his father's will when his father died in 1879. In the 1870s, Squire began doing a successful business in dry goods and groceries in Cherry Valley and by 1900, he had moved to nearby Richmond Center. His wife Augusta died in 1904. Later the same year, he married the widow Olive L. Trimmer née Warren in Ashtabula County. She died in 1918. Squire was living in New Lyme, Ashtabula County when he died in 1920. He is buried with his parents in Cherry Valley Cemetery in Cherry Valley, Ohio.

Surname note

In this Fitz Randolph family, Fitz appears to have been used by Squire's father Abram as part of his surname or as a middle name: the Oris H.F. Randolph genealogy (referenced below) assumes this to be the case when listing the children in the family in which Abram is a child. Fitz does not appear to have been used in any form by Abram's children including Squire. The current consensus is therefore to use the surname Randolph as Squire's Last Name at Birth.
