Oliver J. Ream was a Civil War soldier representing Lancaster County in the Pennsylvania militia. [1] He served as a private in Company B, 47th Regiment under Captain Thomas B. Bryson and Colonel James P. Wickersham. [2] They were mustered in 9 July 1863 and discharged 14 August 1863. [3] He enlisted 2 July 1863. His name was listed as "Oliver Reeme." [4] According to his draft registration record he lived in East Cocalico Township and was a blacksmith like his father Cyrus Ream (1812-1884). [5] On this record his name was spelled "Oliver Ream." [6]
Oliver Ream served with the 47th Regiment, Pennsylvania Militia which was commanded by Colonel James P. Wickersham, a respected educator. [7] Also in this regiment was physician-historian William Henry Egle who later became the State Librarian of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. He was also the author of the publication, Notes and Queries, Historical, Biographical, and Genealogical, Chiefly Relating to Interior Pennsylvania.[8] This unit performed duties in Williamsport, then went on to Reading before they went to the mining regions of Schuylkill county where they help avert a violent collision between disaffected parties. [9] The 47th Regiment, Pennsylvania Militia was a distinct and separate unit from the 47th Regiment, Pennsylvania Infantry. The militia unit of 1863 performed duties not normally associated front line units. They guarded prisoners or strategic locations such as government buildings, railroads, main roadways, etc. [10]
