Biography

Birth and Childhood

Rose Euphemia Record was born in the third quarter of 1878 in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England.[1] She, and her eleven siblings, are the children of Thomas and Ruth (née Gibbon) Record. The GRO Online Index shows the same information for her birth, and gives her mother, Ruth's, maiden name as Gibbins.[2]

In 1881, Rose lived in Lees Street in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England with her older sister Annie, and her younger brother Robert, and their parents.[3] Her father, Thomas, was a carpenter.

In 1891, the family lived on Clifford Road in the Aston area of Birmingham.[4] Rose was the oldest child (of six siblings) still living at home. Rose was 12 years old and worked as a general servant. Her father worked as a carpenter.

Marriage and Children

Rose married Ernest Alfred Shade in Orsett, Essex, England in the spring of 1899.[5] They married in Essex county, near the village where Ernest had previously lived. However, Essex county is over 135 miles from Birmingham, and there is no record that tells us how Rose and Ernest met. After their marriage, Mr. & Mrs. Shade continued to live in the Essex area.

Two years later, they lived just east in Fobbing, Essex, England with their first daughter Jessie.[6] Ernest worked as an Electrical Wireman.

Rose and her family moved back to the Birmingham area sometime between 1903 and 1905. Rose's mother died in 1905 which may be what caused the family to move back to Staffordshire.[20] Rose's son Donald was born there in 1905 just after her mother's death.[11]

In 1911 Rose, Ernest, and their first six children still lived nearby in Handsworth, a suburb of Birmingham.[21] Ernest worked as an electrical engineer in the chemical manufacturing industry. Rose's sister, Elsie May Record, a dress maker, also lived with them. The family may have moved just after the census because Ivy was born later that year in Nuneaton, which was about 20 miles away.[16]

Death

The Birmingham area suffered extensive bombing from 1940 to 1943.[22] None of Rose's family died during the Blitz; however her husband Ernest died in 1945 at age 66.[23] Rose continued living in Nuneaton and died a decade later in the fall of 1958.[24]
