A memorial service for Charles Hopkins Reed, a Bel Air attorney, will be held at 2 p.m. today at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Bel Air.

Mr. Reed, who was 73, died of cancer Feb. 2 at his home.

He was a partner in the firm of Reed, Feinberg and Hatem and a former partner in the firm of Cameron, Close and Reed. Mr. Reed was a former president of the Harford County Bar Association and a member of the Maryland Attorney Grievance Commission. served two terms on the Democratic State Central Committee. In the 1960s, as head of the Harford County school board and of the trustees of the Harford Community College, he helped to desegregate the school system and to pick the site for the college. 1 was a founder and a former chairman of the United World Federalists' Harford County chapter, a founder of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in the county and a former Lions Club president.

Born in Darlington and reared in Bel Air, he attended public schools there and the Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Va. He graduated from Princeton University in 1938 and from the University of Maryland law school.

He was an officer in the Navy in the Pacific during World War II.

Last year, his classmates at Princeton gave him a distinguished service award.

He is survived by his wife, the former Lois Butterworth, whom he married in 1945; two daughters, Susan Reed Walls of Bel Air and Laurie Priscilla Reed of Charlotte, N.C.; two sons, David Worthington Reed of Rockville and Michael Christopher Reed of Findlay, Ohio; a sister, Jean Reed Graybeal of Bel Air; and 10 grandchildren.
