George (Reed) Hodge is a part of US Black heritage.

George was born about 1898. He was the son of Zion Reed and Arbella Hodge.

In the 1900 census George (age 2) was the son of Zion Reed in Wilson Township, Wilson, North Carolina, United States. He was living with his parents.[1]

In the 1910 census George (age 10) was the grandchild of George Hodge in Nahunta, Wayne, North Carolina. He was living with his mother's parents and three uncles.[2]

George registered for the WWI U.S. military draft in 1917 in Wayne, North Carolina, United States.[3]

George Hodge, Private, born 10 Jan 1900, Service Number 4233450, served in the US Army during World War I. He was part of the 348th Labor Service Battalion and served from 31 Oct 1918 to 26 Jul 1919.[4]

George (age 22), grandson of George Hodge & Winnie Hodge, married Mamie Strickland (age 20) on 14 January 1920 in Wilson, Cleveland, North Carolina, United States.[5] George and Mamie had three children.

In the 1930 census George (age 29) was the married head of household in Norfolk, Norfolk, Virginia. [6]

George registered for the WWII U.S. military draft on 16 February 1942 in Norfolk, Virginia.[7]

In the 1950 census George (age 50), Fork-Lift Operator, was the married head of household in Norfolk, Norfolk, Virginia. Mamie, a son, and a grandson were living in the household.[8]

George, son of Zion Reid & Arbella Hodges Reid, died (age 75) on 13 November 1975 in Hampton, Virginia, United States.[9]

George was mentioned on a memorial in Calvary Cemetery, Norfolk, Norfolk City, Virginia, United States with a death date of 14 November 1975.[10]

Research Notes

  • The service numbers dates of birth and service on George's documents do not match. His service cards provide Service #423450 and Aug 1901 dob. His grave marker request and death file provide Service #4233430 and 10 jan 1900.[11][12][13]
  • The citation for the FamilySearch transcription of the 1930 U.S. Census contains the incorrect state. Correct state is Virginia and was changed in citation above.
