James Reed migrated from Scotland to the United States.

They first settled in Harlem, Winnebago by the Scottish Settlement at Argyle. ^[5]

By 1860 they were living in Ogle County, Illinois.

In the US he became known as Reed.

James died in 1869 of diabetes. ^[6]
