In his father's (John Reid (-1848)) will dated January 4, 1843, it is noted that Samuel is "In Canada".
In a letter home in 1950 John Freeman Reid (1820-1866) wrote “....He told me my brother Samuel is living in a place called Mimico about nine miles from Toronto and is in a delicate state of health....”[1] Mimico is in Etobicoke, York (county), and in the 1951 Census, there is only one Samuel Reid (of any spelling) there.

Research Notes

There is some concern amongst the family about this (or these?) being the correct Samuel. Inclusion is based on the John Freeman Reid (1820-1866) written note saying Samuel is in Mimico in 1850, and the fact that there is only 1 Samuel Reid in Etobicoke in 1851. Mimico is part of Etobicoke.

Working on the premise that Samuel Reid (1812-) is the Father of Eliza (Reid) Daniels (1833-1921), the Samuel Reed in the 1861 census cannot be the same one, as they didn't marry until 12 years after Eliza was born, also they are 16 years older than the 1851Census. 3rd strike is they changed churches as well...

The Samuel Reid Conundrum: "According to The Reid History written in 1936, “....When out alone one night another brother, Samuel, was attacked by a mob of Roman Catholics, for whose separate schools we are now being taxed, and would have been murdered had it not been for the timely arrival of a woman who saved him. He died some time later, it was thought from the abuse they had given him.....”" [6]

This must have happened in Ireland, as Ontario did not start collecting taxes for Catholic Schools until 1855, and then it was collecting on behalf of the Catholic Schools[7]

The Rev. William N. Falkiner indignantly characterized emigration from this parochial union as follows: "Several very respectable Protestant families have left this, much disgusted at the situation they were in, unprotected from lawless aggression of mobs, and deserted by Government; such were their complaints; they went to Canada."[8]
