Note N112Notes for CLEO REID:
Very little is known about Cleo "Leonard" Reid. His brother Benjamin called him the "black sheep of our family." What is known about him is that he was born in about 1909 most likely in Bay City, Michigan. The Census records for 1910 show the family living in Bay City with Cleo listed in the age category as New Born. The Bay City phone directory shows in 1909 that the family lived at 5009 18th Street. When his mother Nancy died in 1910 his father James turned Cleo and Benjamin over to his mother and father in Law (Herbert and Mary Trombley) to live in Turner, Michigan. Cleo remained there until the death of his grandfather in 1921. It was difficult for his grandmother to care for both children so she returned Cleo to his father who was living in Flint, Michigan.
The next mention of Cleo was found in his brother Benjamin's journal which stated that he had traveled to Flint to try and locate his brother. He found him shining shoes and as they talked Cleo stated(according to Benjamin) that his father made him work long hours and would take all of his money when he was paid. Benjamin would next see his brother in Detroit. Cleo had run away from home and wentto Detroit to see if he could live with him. Not being able to do this Cleo once again dropped from site until several years later when he again showed up in Detroit where he found Benjamin in a hospital recovering from surgery. With Cleo were a couple of "show girls" and Cleo asked for money so he could go to New York City, New York where he wanted to get into show business on the stage in vaudeville. Benjamin did give some money to Cleo who did travel to New York where he worked in vaudeville for a time with an actress named Mitzi Green who later would star in several motion pictures.
Cleo surfaced again in Chicago sometime in the late 1920's or early 1930's. Records show that he married Marie F. Grittman and they had one son named James L. Reid. The next memory anyone has of Cleo was related to me by my mother Elizabeth Smith. She related that when she was very young, about 4 years old Cleo came to their home saying he needed a jacket. When he left no one heard from him again until his father's funeral. After that no one ever heard from him again.
