Daniel Julius Arthur de Renouard was born on 20 Nov 1836 in Eckernförde, Rendsburg-Eckernförde, Schleswig, Danmark, son of Louis Paul Renouard (1780–1857) and Johanna Eleonora Gerlach (1801–1871). He was christened on 10 Mar 1837 in Eckernförde.
Duchy of Schleswig
The Duchy of Schleswig (Danish: Hertugdømmet Slesvig; German: Herzogtum Schleswig) was a duchy in Southern Jutland (Sønderjylland) south of the current border between Germany and Denmark. The territory has been divided between the two countries since 1920, with Northern Schleswig in Denmark and Southern Schleswig in Germany. However, in the 1700’s and until 1864 the Duchy of Schleswig was under Danish rule, being a fief of Denmark. (Unlike the duchies of Holstein and Lauenburg, which were part of the German Confederation.)
During the 1800’s both Danish and German National Liberals wanted Schleswig to be part of a Danish or German national state in the 19th century. A German uprising in March 1848 caused the First Schleswig War which ended in 1852. The Second Schleswig War (1864) ended with the three duchies of Schleswig, Holstein and Lauenburg being governed jointly by Austria and Prussia. In 1866, they became a part of Prussia.
