Biography

Adam RETTIE was born in 1841 in Monquhitter, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. He was the child of Adam RETTIE and Mary DUNCAN.

In 1841, he lived in Cuminestown in the parish of Monquhitter, Aberdeenshire, Scotland with his father Adam, mother Mary, sister Susan and James ROBERTSON (5).[1]

In 1851, he lived in Cuminestown in the parish of Monquhitter, Aberdeenshire, Scotland with his father Adam and mother Mary.[2] He was 9 years old and a Scholar at that point.

On 4 Jun 1864, he married Harriet MIDDLETON (17 Dec 1834) at the Manse in Methlick, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.[3] He was 22 years old and worked as an Agricultural Labourer when he married Harriet, who was 29 years old at that time. He had six children with Harriet MIDDLETON: Susan RETTIE (13 Jul 1864), Adam RETTIE (15 Jul 1866), John RETTIE (20 Dec 1867), James RETTIE (31 Oct 1871), William RETTIE (21 Nov 1873), George RETTIE (9 Sep 1875).

When he was 23 years old, his father Adam RETTIE died on 24 Aug 1864.

In 1871, he worked as a Farm Servant and lived at 48 Village Street, Monquhitter, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.[4] Also present in the household were his wife Harriet, his children Susan (6, Scholar), Adam (4) and John (3), and his step-children Alexander GRAY (10, Scholar) and Mary Ann MARK (15, Domestic Servant).

In 1881, he lived at 2 Merkland Road in the parish of Old Machar in Aberdeen, Scotland.[5] He was 39 years old at that point and worked as a Gas Stocker (surely Stoker? Rettie-2 15:45, 4 October 2014 (EDT)) . Also present in the household were his wife Harriet, step son Alexander GRAY (20), daughter Susan (16) and sons Adam (14), John (13), James (9) and George (5).

In 1891, he lived at Summer Lane, in the parish of St Nicholas in Aberdeen, Scotland.[6] He was 49 years old at that point and worked as a Gas Stoker. Also present in the household were his wife Harriet and sons John (23) and George (15).

His mother Mary DUNCAN died on 1 Jun 1891.

On 18 Nov 1893, he died of Erysipelas at the Royal Infirmary in Aberdeen, Scotland when he was 52 years old.[7] His wife Harriet MIDDLETON died on 10 Feb 1905, 11 years after him.
