Elva was born in 1908, the daughter of Edward Richards and Sarah Harriett Ferguson.
She married James Henry Benson in 1932. Their marriage record reads:
- James Henry Benson, farmer, 29, bachelor, residing and born in Proton Township, son of John Benson and Sarah Jane Drake, married
- Elva Sarah Richards, school teacher, 25, spinster, residing in Rockspring, born in Elizabethtown, daughter of Edward Richards and Sarah Harriett Ferguson,
- At Rockspring, in the Township of Elizabethtown Township, on the 3rd day of August, 1932.
Together they had the following children:
- Unnamed baby boy, stillborn on August 16, 1934
