Biography

The daughter of James Monroe Riddle (1847-) and Eliza Jane Thornton (1851-), Martha Riddle was born in Unionville, Georgia[citation needed] in 1869, residing there with her family.[1][2]

Martha married Caswell Peurifoy, marrying in Lake County, Florida on March 10, 1889[3] and having seven known children together. They worked as tenant farmers and her husband also worked on others' farms, residing in 1900 in Umatilla, Florida,[4] in 1910, in Fort Mason, Florida,[5] and in 1920, in Grand Island, Florida,[6] where her husband worked on a citrus farm. By 1930, they had purchased their own land in Bradenton, Florida, to farm citrus,[7] but by 1935 they were again renting, enumerated that year in Venice, Florida.[8] By 1940, residing in Bradenton, Florida, her husband no longer worked outside the home.[9] Her daughter, Mildred Hall, lived with Mattie and her husband in 1940, along with Mildred's son, Dick, with Mildred working as a junior high school teacher.

Widowed in 1946, Mattie lived in 1950 in Bradenton, Florida with Mildred and her son,[10] while her daughter as a junior high school school teacher and Mildred's son worked as a paper cutter in a box factory. Martha Peurifoy passed away in Bradenton, Florida[11] at the age of 92 and is buried with her husband at Manasota Memorial Park in Bradenton.[12]
