Biography

Ellen (Riley) Stephens was born in India

Ellen Isabella Riley was born around 1862 as the first child of John Riley.

When she was about 21, on 29 Nov 1883, she married John Edwin Stephens, son of John Stephens and Andrea Catherine (family name unknown), in Jalandhar, , India.^[1]

Ellen and John had the following children:

1. Muril Aileen Isadora Stephens was born on 21 Sep 1884 in Jalandhar. She married John Over on 28 Apr 1902 in Murree, Punjab, Pakistan.
2. Leonard Reilly Stephens was born on 14 Mar 1887 in Jalandhar. He died on 22 Jan 1964 in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, England (46 Hilbert Road). He married Doris Gertrude Annie Corrie on 29 Oct 1919 in Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan (The Cathedral).
3. Richard John Stephens was born on 23 Dec 1891.
4. Pearl Ellen Isabella Stephens was born on 06 Mar 1895 in India, and she married Christopher Burke Mayes on 08 Feb 1915 in Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan. On 29 Aug 1919, when aged 24, she died in Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan, due to a gunshot wound resulting from a murder-suicide involving her husband.

Ellen died on 30 Jan 1925 at Rāwalpindi, Punjab, Pakistan, commonly known as Pindi. ^[2] Ellen was buried the day she died at Westridge, Rāwalpindi, Punjab, Pakistan.^[3]

Death and Burial

There was a cemetery at Westridge in Rawalpindi which was an Army Graveyard (See photos on Google Earth). The area was adjacent to a Railway Colony. We don't yet know if Ellen's husband, John, was involved with the Railways or the Army.

Ellen was buried at West Ridge, Rawalpindi and buried the same day she died, so very likely died somewhere in Rawalpindi.
