Skidby Carr, where we find the Rispins in 1871, stretched in the fertile but watery lands between the River Hull and Skidby. That is why the parish church is St John, Newland, on Clough Rd Hull: the land went north from that area into present day Dunswell: None of it is in Skidby today. (2020)
In 1871 Ann Rispin is an Agricultural Labourer's wife in Skidby Carr, apparently well inside the 20th century boundaries of Hull and not far from the banks of the River Hull. With Ann and her husband John, are six children, ranging down from Charlotte at 12 years to young John just 5 months old. [1]
In 1891 John Rispin 56 is a farmer , employer, in Woodmansey, a village immediately south of Beverley: His Sons and Daughters (the Capital letters indicate that this is not just a line of descent, but also a position in the farm as a business) Hannah, Mary, Walker and John are all four workers, as is Herbert who seems to be a cousin and a farm servant. Eliza and George, the youngest children age 16 and 10 are not yet employees, though they were certainly expected to do some work on the farm or with their mother in the house and yard. [2]
