Biography

Sarah L. Roane was the youngest child of John and Mary (Hurney) Roane. Her father died in Ireland just before her first birthday.

She was brought up by her mother, Mary, and her stepfather, Patrick O'Neill, with two older brothers (John and James) and two half-brothers (Frederick and Frank).

Sarah attended Lowell's Charles Street primary school, Edson grammar school, and graduated from Lowell high school.

She married William J. Robinson in Lowell, on 29 April 1895 (Her name is recorded, "Sadie L. Roane"). William was a machinist shop foreman at US Cartridge Company, and a transplant from his native Bridgeport, Connecticut.

The next year, Sarah and William welcomed a son, William Samuel, into their home at 11 South Whipple Street. Just three years later, Sarah succumbed to tuberculosis.

Her loss was felt beyond the home and family. The front page of the Lowell Sun for Tuesday, May 23, 1899 featured the following headline:

WAS IMPRESSIVE
Funeral Service of Sarah L. Robinson
At the Sacred Heart Church this Morning
Beautiful Flowers, and a Large Congregation

[Excerpt] Preceding the funeral hour this morning and throughout yesterday and last night, large gatherings of friends and relatives visited the residence... and gazed upon the face once radiant with the smile and sunshine of good cheer now stilled in the eternal sleep which knows no awakening. The features betrayed no evidence of the illness and suffering which the deceased had passed through. She looked more like one in peaceful slumber than one cold in the embrace of death.

The deceased was a woman of the strictest integrity, kindness and courteous toward all; honored and beloved by her family, her neighbors, and many devoted friends."

Sarah was interred in "the Catholic cemetery" (Saint Patrick's Cemetery) in the O'Neill / Roane family lot.
