Research Notes

James Austin Robbins (1823-1884) and Rebecca Jane (Pennington) Robbins (1830-1907) had a daughter on 9/25/1857 in Virginia, named Moriah. It is quite likely Moriah is Martha Marinda, based on these matches:

  • Martha's maiden name matches Robins
  • Martha's age in the 1880 census is consistent with her birth record
  • Martha's birth month and year in the 1900 census (Sept. 1857) match her birth record
  • Martha's birth state and father's birth state in Martha's 1880 and 1900 census match the birth record
  • Martha's mother's birth state in Martha's 1900 census matches the birth record
  • Martha's mother's birth state in Martha's 1880 census KY instead of VA, but since Harlan Co., KY, and Lee Co., VA are adjacent, this is not a serious discrepancy
  • Martha's first son is James A, similar to her father's name (James Austin)
  • Martha's fifth son is Joseph Pennington, using her mother's maiden name
  • Martha's fourth daughter is Grace Rebecca, using her mother's first name as the middle
  • Martha's sixth son is Thomas Robins, using her maiden name
