Biography

George died in the winter or early spring 1775. His will was dated Sept. 5, 1774, and probated April 17, 1775 in Culpeper County, Virginia.[1] His wife was named Elizabeth in numerous deeds throughout his life. She and his apparent eldest son George, noted as having already received his share of George's estate, were named as his executors and granted administration of his estate in on the day his will was proved.

George's will only named his five sons and one apparent son-in-law. His children who in 1818 survived his unmarried son, Ensign William Roberts, were named in an 1834 suit filed against the Commonwealth of Virginia.[2]

Will

In the name of God Amen I George Roberts of Culpeper County and Saint Marks parish being verry sick and weak but of perfect strength of memory and well knowing all men must die I therefore give my soul to Almighty God beseeching him by & through the merits of Jesus Christ my Dear Savior and Redeemer to pardon all my sins and offences against his divine Majesty and Likewise I give my Body to buried in a Christian like manner and for the worldly Estate it hath pleased Almighty God to bestoe on me I do give as Followeth to wit.
Item I do give the land I do now on live to my son John Roberts and my son Joseph Roberts to be Eqeley Divided Between them and their Hairs [sic]. Likewise a piece of Land I Bought of William Morgan to John & Joseph Roberts and their Hairs.
Item I do give to my son Benja Roberts and my son William Roberts a tract of Land Lying at the Great Mountain whereon my Quarter now is to be eqeley divided between them and their Hairs. I do leave that peace [sic] of Land whereon Francis Clift now Lives to be sold by my Executors to and the payment of my Debts.
Item My will and Desier is that all my slaves remain in the Possession of my Executors For and During the term of four years for the use of Raising money to pay my Debts now due and the Experation of the time before mentioned my Desier my slaves with my personal Estate be Eqeley divided amongst my wife and Children Except George Roberts and Charles Clifton is to have no part of stock and household Furniture they having had their part I also do Constitute and appoint my Loveing wife and son George Roberts my hole and sole Executors of this my Last will and Testament Given under my hand & seal this 5 September 1774.

Roberts the said Joseph Roberts had died leaving children, Philip & Fanny Roberts; Corella Bohon, late Roberts; Hannah Clifton, late Roberts; Milley O'Bannon, late Roberts; Elizabeth, Joseph & William Roberts; Polly Gibson, late Roberts; Henry & Thomas Roberts... this affidavit was made in February 1834 in Owen Co KY by George Willis & Phillip Roberts along with Edwin Toole.

William Beverley's line and Corner to Benjamin Roberts in the Great Fork of Rappahannock River thence with Roberts line to white Oak, Corner to Francis Kirtley, thence with the Kirtley's line... to two white Oaks, Corner to John Kilgore, thence with Kilgore's to one white Oak & Willow, Corner to William Payton, thence with Payton's line to one white Oak, thence North to two white Oaks on Hammonds Branch, Corner to Daniel Huff...etc.

SHELBY COUNTY: British Mercantile Claims 1775-1803. Virginia Genealogist Vol. 31 #1 GEORGE ROBERTS, Culpeper, L4.0.0, due John Bland's Trustee.
