Biography

Joseph Pilot Roberts, Sr. was born 29 September 1826 in Green Turtle Cay, Abaco, Bahamas to Benjamin Roberts Sr. and Charlotte Russell Roberts.

He married twice: first, in 1847, in Key West, Florida to Mary Constance Adams, daughter of Thomas Randal Adams and Mary Elizabeth Roberts Adams; and, second, in 1867, in Key West, to Mrs. Emeline Frances Watlington Ward, daughter of Captain Francis Benjamin Watlington and Emeline Johnson Watlington and widow of Lt. William Henry Ward.

JP and Mary Roberts had children Benjamin, Joseph Pilot Jr., Richard, Mary Elizabeth, Thomas Henry, Samuel, and Robert Isaac McCook Roberts. Emeline and Joseph Roberts had a daughter Lillie, and two sons, Francis and Charles Ernest Roberts.

In the 1830s, Joseph accompanied his family to Key Vacas, Florida and became a wrecker like his father.[1] In later years, he established Joseph P. Roberts & Sons - a chandlery and hardware store - on Caroline Street, Key West, Florida. He was a founding member of Sparks (Methodist) Chapel, a freemason, and remembered as Key West's first weatherman.

Joseph Pilot Roberts died 30 April 1877 in Key West, Florida at 50 years of age and was buried in the City Cemetery. He left a will that was written in March 1877.
