Biography

Mary was born about 1813 in Barony, Lanarkshire, Scotland. Barony is part of the city of Glasgow.^[1]

Mary married James Thomson on 3 Mar 1833 in Barony, Lanark, Scotland.^[2] 'James Thomson weaver ...... & Mary Robertson residing in Neilston Parish' transcribed from image ^[3] The couple had at least seven children, born between 1835 and 1855, all in Lanarkshire, Scotland.^[4][1][5]

By the time of the 1841 England Wales and Scotland census, Mary and James had been married for eight years. They had three children, William (7), Marion (5) and Thomas (2). They lived at Carnbroe Ironworks, Ironworks House, 28, Bothwell, Lanarkshire, Scotland. James was a coal miner, recorded age 30; Mary was recorded as 25.^[4]

In 1851 the family had moved to Mid Street, Old Monkland, Airdrie & Middle Ward, Lanarkshire. James (46) and oldest child William (16) were coal miners. Two further children had been born since the 1841 census, John (10) and Margaret (1).^[1]

The family had moved to England by the time of the 1861 England, Wales and Scotland Census. Mary was 48 and James (surname spelt Thompson) was 56. The couple had six children at home, Wm Jno (25, coal miner), Thomas (22, coal miner), John (19, coal miner), Margaret (11, scholar), James (8, scholar) and Andrew (6, scholar), all born in Scotland. They lived at 2, Front Row, Holywell Township, Earsdon Parish, with two lodgers, Thomas Robertson (27. coal miner) and Nolle Thompson (22, coal miner), both born in Scotland and probably family members.^[5]

Ten years later, in 1871, James and Mary lived at 264 Blue Row, Seghill, Northumberland with children Thomas (32, coal miner), James (18, coal miner), Andrew (16, coal miner) and Margaret F (21, dressmaker). James was a Furnace Keeper Caol mine, age 66.^[6]

Research Notes

I have searched the GRO index for a Mary Thomson who died after 1871 in Tynemouth but have not been able to find one of the right age. I cannot find Mary in the census after 1871. Humphrey-6461 22:16, 6 November 2018 (UTC)
