Biography

Elizabeth was born on 25 June 1833, and was baptised at Cambuslang, Lanarkshire, on 7 July 1833. A copy of her baptismal record[1] has been uploaded to the Images. She was the daughter of William Robertson and his wife Mary Robertson.

She grew up with her family in Cambuslang, as evidenced by her appearances in the Scotland censuses of 1841[2], where they lived at Silver Banks; and 1851[3], where they lived at West Coats.

On 22 August 1856, Elizabeth married James Baird, a coal miner from Newton Colliery, Cambuslang, at the Manse of Cambuslang. A copy of their marriage record[4] has been uploaded to the images.

They lived most of their lives in Baillieston, Lanarkshire, where James toiled as a coal miner, as evidenced by their listings in the Scotland Censuses of 1861[5] where they lived at Dandy Row; 1871[6] where they lived at Muirhead Row; and 1881[7] where they lived at 21 Reid's Row. These accomodations, and a lifestyle of great hardship implied by them, were described in an article published in the Glasgow Herald on 2 February 1875[8].

James passed away from Tuberculosis in 1889 leaving Elizabeth a widow, and we subsequently find her listed in the Scotland Census of 1891[9], living with her daughter and son-in-law and their family at Laigh Crosshill. We have not yet uncovered her listing in the Scotland census of 1901.

Elizabeth passed away, age 70, at Low Crosshill, Baillieston, on 28 November 1903[10]. A copy of her death record has been uploaded to the Images.
