James was baptized 29 June 1717 in Scotland and emigrated to America in 1756 where he served in the British Army. He later served as the 40th governor of New York colony. He was appointed Commander-in-chief in North America 4 February 1782. He was commissioned Lt. General later that year and in 1783 he returned to England. He died in London in 1788.
