Thomas was born about 1593. (Although we have no firm evidence as to when he was born it is most likely to have been in 1593 or soon afterwards, because his parents were unsuccessful with their first Thomas, who was baptised on 24 Mar 1592 at Kirkby Fleetham, Yorkshire, England and died five days later.) He was a Barrister of Gray's Inn, of which society he was entered on 9 Aug 1612.
In June 1621 he married Frances, daughter of Leonard Smelt, of Kirkby-Fleetham, Richmond, Yorkshire.[1][2][3][4] They had the following children:
Mary, who married Christopher Blenco/Blencow[1][3] and who would probably have been their oldest child if date information on her profile is right
William, age 40 at the time of Dugdale's 1665 Visitation[1][3] and baptised at Rokeby, Yorkshire on 16 December 1624[5]
Frances, baptised at Rokeby, Yorkshire on 15 July 1627,[6] who married George Gray[1][3]
Matthew,[1][3] baptised at Rokeby, Yorkshire on 14 December 1628[7][8] ('England Births and Christenings says 14 January 1628, almost certainly meaning 14 January 1628/9[9])
John, baptised on 9 December 1632 at Rokeby, Yorkshire, England. He was buried there on 4 October that year[10][11]
Thomas, baptised at Rokeby, Yorkshire on 10 May 1635, buried there on 29 December 1635[12][13]
In the English Civil Wars he took the side of Parliament. He quickly rose to the rank of lieutenant-colonel (or possibly colonel) in the Yorkshire forces, and was appointed to the North Riding committee in February 1643. He was killed in action in a skirmish near Leeds.,and was buried in the parish church on 20 June 1643.[3]
He raised a troop of horse at his own expense in the English Civil War.
