James was born in Plymouth, Illinois on 14 Aug 1832 [1] He married Ruth Hogshead around 1856. She died in July, 1874, and then he married Margaret Schnatterly 10 Dec 1874 in McDonough County, Illinois. [2]
His second wife, Margaret Schnatterly, was first hired to be the housekeeper and care for the children after Ruth died.
"James was a cattleman and farmer. He served as the Treasurer of McDonough County. When Jennie was 6, he took Minton and Ben out west. After looking for land in Wyoming, they traveled to Colorado to prospect for gold. Ten years later, he returned to Plymouth. After a week, Margaret told him that he could live with the family "but not as a husband." Apparently this did not appeal to James, and he went to live with a daughter from his previous marriage (note: 1920 census states he was living with his son William) [3]
James' son Andrew quit school and worked long hours at a grocery store to help provide for the family. This allowed James' daughter Jennie to complete school, something Andrew was very proud of." [4]
James died in 1923 [5] and is buried in Bethel Cemetery, Fandon, Illinois [6]
