William Roche was born about 1817 in Ireland and married his wife, Elizabeth there. They had one child, Elizabeth, in 1841 and left for the United States shortly thereafter, as their second child, John, was born in the United States about 1843.
The 1851 Canadian census[1][2] shows William and Eliza Roche, 34 and 32 respectively and both born in Ireland, living with their children in Simcoe, Norfolk, Canada West:
Also, according to this record, Elizabeth was born in Ireland, John was born in the United States, and the little girls were born in Canada. William was a school teacher. When reviewing these documents, bear in mind that the ages listed on the census record represent the age of the person on his or her NEXT birthday, as noted at the top of Column 6 on the census form. The ages listed above have been adjusted for that.
Ergo, timeline, based on the 1851 census:[1]
In the 1881 census (Canada),[3] we see William, 61 and Elizabeth 60, with only one (presumed) child, Jeannie, 21, all born in Ireland. William' occupation is listed as a school teacher. Again, ages have been adjusted to show age at the time of census, not on next birthday
William died on 5 Jun 1882 in Charlotteville, Norfolk, Ontario, Canada after an illness of several months' duration (fibroid degeneration of the lungs).[4]
