Research Notes

Churches in Portland

The original parish church of Portland was St Andrew, the ruins of which are currently located above Church Ope Cove. In 1734 there was a major landslip ("The Great Southwell Landslip") in which most of the churchyard was lost and the foundations of the church destabilised. The church continued to be used for services until 1756, and burials continued in the churchyard until 1752 ("St Andrew"). The parish then used "The Tabenacle" in Wakeham for services until the new church of St George was consecrated in 1766. ("History of Portland")
