John Savery Rodd, son of John Rodd and Bridget Rodd, was baptised on 20 January 1807 in Barnstaple, Devon, England, United Kingdom.[1][2] His father was a Surveyor.[3]
John married Catherine Murray on 20 September 1837 in St Clement Danes, Westminster, Middlesex, England, United Kingdom. She was a daughter of Thomas Murray, a surgeon in the Royal Artillery. The Register shows John, a Gentleman, was living at 9 Norfolk Street; Catherine was living at 8 Norfolk Street.[3][4]
John emigrated to Australia at some point prior to 1839 (when his daughter Anna Maria Letitia Catherine Rodd was baptised in Saint James, New South Wales).
Children baptised in the Colony of New South Wales:
Anna Maria Letitia Catherine Rodd was baptised in 1839 in Saint James, New South Wales.[5]
Ellen Webster Rodd was baptised in 1840 in Bathurst, New South Wales.[6]
Sophia Florence Rodd was baptised in 1842 in Kelso, New South Wales.[7]
Constance Josephine Rodd was baptised in 1844 in Kelso, New South Wales.[8]
John Edward Tremaine Rodd was baptised in 1848 in Kelso, New South Wales.[9]
In 1852, Rodd owned at a large property in Bathurst but according to newspaper reports left the district about Oct 1852.[10] By July 1853, Rodd was living at "Fleurs" at South Creek (now known as St Marys, a suburb of Sydney),[11] a property which he owned for 50 years.[12]
The "Estate of Fleurs" was situated on the South Creek at its junction with Kemp's Creek. Fleurs was previously owned by FO Darvall who offered the property for Auction in October 1852. At that time, it comprised 1823 acres with 1573 cleared and stumped ready for cultivation. Other improvements included a colonial stone dwelling-house, a range of stone buildings and relevantly, a small vineyard of 4 1/2 acres which was already producing fruit. Rodd purchased the property from Darvall and moved there the same year.[13]
John Savery Rodd died (age 62) on 26 January 1870 at his residence "Tarpien", Potts Point, New South Wales.
[14][15] His remains were interred in St John's (Anglican) Church/Graveyard, Ashfield, New South Wales.[16][17][18]
John's wife Kate Rodd died on 19 November 1884 and was buried in New South Wales, Australia.[19]
