Biography

Sarah Emmeline Rodden was born in either McMinn County, Tennessee or Monroe County, Tennessee, based on other Tennessee births in the family, in Mar 1837 to Spencer William Henry Roden and his wife, Elizabeth (Hill) Rodden. McMinn and Monroe Counties were establisedh at the same time (1819) and are adjacent to to one another and very close to Alabama. Judging from the children's birth places, there was significant movement between those three places, but possibly not much in terms of miles.

Sarah married James Oliver Lewis on 5 Jan 1852 in McMinn County, Tennessee.[1] The couple had 11 children:

  3. George W. Lewis,
  4. William H. Lewis,
  5. James Monroe (or Carlock) Lewis,
  6. Caleb Hoyl Lewis,
  7. Jackson Lewis,
  8. Joseph Zollicoffer Lewis,
  9. Robert Spencer Lewis,
  10. Caroline Lewis and
  11. John Lewis.

In the 1860 census Sarah (age 22) was at 13th Civil District, McMinn, Tennessee, United States.[2] This report shows three children, suggesting tht the first two died in infancy. Given their mother was a young teen bride, that is logical.
