There died in Parkes, last week, Mr. J. H. Rogers, aged 73, who has been a resident of Bedgerebong for the last 50 years. The deceased was a noted footrunner, and considered one of the cracks of his day. When he was 25 years of age, he won the Stawell Gift, in which there were 99 runners, and he also won three of the biggest events in New Zealand. When Mr. M. B. Newell purchased a yearling colt at the Sydney sales, somewhere about 1915, the deceased said to him: "What are you going to call him, Bernard ?" "Well," replied Mr. Newell, seeing that you have been such a great runner, and I expect the colt to be one also, I will call him after you." That colt is Mr. Ryan's sire Jack Rogers, which won 87 races altogether, and whose stock is carrying on the good work.
