Stefano Romito died in the Cooley iron ore mine test pit while rescuing another miner overcome by fumes on 9 Aug 1935

Stefano “Steven” Romito (Romita) was born on 3 September 1892 in a suburb of Bari, Italy to Frank Romita and Anna Caporusso.

In 1908, he traveled by ship with his brother, Fedele, from Naples, Italy to Ellis Island, New York. [1] [2]

Ellis Island Foundation Passenger Search yields No. 101870040313 Stefano Romita, December 24th, 1908 Luisiana and No. 101085040116 March 15th, 1911 Duca di Genova.

The brothers would make a second trip to the United States and Ellis Island in 1911. [3] [4] While Stefano stayed in the United States, Fedele eventually continued on to Toronto, Canada.

Stefano would marry his first wife, Armalinda Ficera, in Minnesota and have four children over the next 10 years. [5] He would then marry Mary Dearing in 1927 after the death of Armalinda. [6] [7]

Stefano worked in the iron ore mine at Cooley (Nashwauk), Minnesota and passed away in 1935 while trying to rescue another miner who had been overcome by toxic fumes inside a mining test pit. [8] While he was successful, he ultimately gave his life to save another (safety award citation). [9] His wife, Mary, was granted a $20 per month pension by the Carnegie Bern Fund Commission. [10]

Stefano is interned in Maple Hill Cemetery, Hibbing, MN. [11]
