Biography

Isabel was the daughter of William de Ros and Eustache FitzRalph.[1] Her parents were married in 1268[1] so she must have been born after then.

In 1273, when she was still a young child, she married Marmaduke de Thweng.[1][2] They had six sons and three daughters:

  • Marmaduke[1][2]
  • William (successor)[1][2]
  • Robert (priest and baron)[1][2]
  • Thomas (priest and baron)[1][2]
  • John, prior of Bridlington[1]
  • Nicholas[1]
  • Lucy[1], wife of Sir Robert Lumley[3]
  • Margaret , wife of Sir Robert de Hilton[1]
  • Katherine, wife of Sir Ralph d'Aubeney[1]

Isabel died in 1309.[1][2]

There seems to be no evidence for the birth and death places. Her father was "of Igmanthorpe", Yorkshire - and elsewhere - but that does not mean she was born there. Her husband held Kilton Castle - and again lands elsewhere - but that does not mean she died at Kilton. Unless anyone can come up with a source, I am minded to delete the places. There also appears to be no source for Isabel being a nun and prioress of Rosedale. Her sister Mary de Ros was a prioress who resigned in 1310 - VCH History of Yorkshire - and has probably been confused with Isabel. Her husband survived her which makes it extremely unlikely she became a nun and prioress. Again, unless anyone can produce a source, I propose to delete the statement that she was a prioress.
