Biography

John Roseby JP was born in 1835 in County Durham, England, United Kingdom. He was the son of Thomas Roseby, a monumental mason, and Ann Lowes.

The young family migrated to New South Wales (Australia) aboard the Arab, departing England on 3rd June 1841.

Upon completed his formal education, he followed his father into the trade as a monumental mason. [1]

John married Ann Hooworth in 1860 in Glebe, New South Wales (Australia), according to Methodist Rites. [2] The couple had nine sons and four daughters, three of whom died in infancy (a daughter and two sons). John's younger brother, Reverend Doctor Thomas later married Ann's younger sister, Sarah.

He was elected as an alderman of the Sydney City Council for the Ward of Cook from December 1870 to December 1872. Commissioned as a Justice of the Peace (JP) in 1871. [3] In October 1877 he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly for the division of Shoalhaven, serving until his defeat in November 1882. [3] He was bankrupted in 1885 and discharged in 1897. [1]

John was active in charitable work, being a director of the Benevolent Asylum from 1876 until 1898 (treasurer in 1898), representing New South Wales at an Australasian Conference on Charity in Melbourne in 1890, and active in the Protestant Political Association from 1868 until 1872. He was a member of the Public School League in 1874 and a strong advocate of temperence. [3]

Aged 63 years, John passed away in 22nd April 1898 at home near Hyde Park, in Sydney, New South Wales and is buried in the Wesleyan section of Rookwood Cemetery. [4] He was survived by Ann, six sons and three daughters, a daughter-in-law, and one grandson.
