George was born in the Cherokee Nation (East) on March 30, 1830. He was the son of John Ross and Quatie Brown. The family was Removed to Indian Territory over the Trail of Tears and George's mother died en route. George had one wife, Nancy Otterlifter. They were the parents of five children: Elsie (died young), Jennie, Silas, Collins (died young), and Sarah. George also parented Cucumber Ross with a Creek woman named Quetisi, William Ross with Betsy Youngpig, and Mary Ross with Nellie Shell. [1] He served with his brother Allen in the Indian Home Guards (Union) in the Civil War. [2] George died March 8, 1870 and is buried at the Ross Cemetery, Park Hill, Oklahoma. [3]
