Biography

Bessie (Roth) Fogle was an Ohioan.

Bessie was born on Christmas Day, 25 December 1899. She was the daughter of Jacob Roth and Barbara Weaver. She was the first of two sisters born in a family with seven brothers.^[1]

Prior to marrying Walter, Bessie, age 16, had a child out of wedlock with a man named Ralph Hoffman Robb, who was age 30. This resulted in a daughter.

It is not know if Bessie's relationship with Ralph was consensual or forced. Leora grew up with her grandparents, Jacob and Barbara Roth.

Marriage and Family
Less than a year after she had her daughter, Leora, she married Walter A. Fogle on 25 August 1917 in Holmes, Ohio. Walter was the son of Maurice Taylor Fogle and Cora Estte Davis.^[3]

The Edwin Shaw Sanatorium
Numerous members of this family spent time at the Edwin Shaw Sanatorium in Akron, Ohio, for tuberculosis. His half sister, Nancy (Fogle) Roth, who married the brother of his wife, died from tuberculosis in 1910.

Maxson Family Ancestors
Bessie E. Roth was a direct descendent of the Rev. Joseph Maxson from Rhode Island. The description of where her 5th great grandfather and many other ancestors are buried reads: This Monument is a memorial to the early pastors of the Second Seventh Day Baptist Church in America. Whose remains lie buried with in the enclosing circle. They were stalwart men and sound preachers. They fought a good fight and kept the faith. Upon this spot stood the house of worship from 1680 to 1852.
