Joseph was born about 1840. He hailed from Manchester, UK. He was the son of Joseph Rothwell and Elizabeth Hulme.
On 6 September 1840 he was christened at the Cathedral in Manchester. [1]
Aged 2 he traveled with his parents Joseph (38) and Elizabeth (35) and his siblings Richard aged 7 and James on the Thomas Sparks in 1842 for Nelson.[2]
On 1 March 1866 Alice Elizabeth Gardner and Joseph Rothwell were married. [3]

They had five sons and four daughters. He lived in Nelson for most of his life.
He passed away on 14 August 1901 aged 61.

The late Mr. Joseph Rothwell, whose death was announced yesterday, was an old settler, and had spent practically the whole of his life in Nelson. He came from Manchester in the ship Thomas Sparks early in 1843, when quite a young child. He had been a member of the Nelson Lodge of Oddfellows for 40 years. Deceased leaves a widow and five sons and four daughters. He had been in failing health for the last few months. About three months ago he had a fall from a tree, and he never seemed to have recovered from the shock. The funeral is announced for to-morrow afternoon.
