Jean Baptiste Roy was born around 1821, the son of Vincent Roy Sr., a Anishinaabe métis fur trader and Elizabeth LaCombre Roy, likely a métis woman.
In the 1850 census, Jean Baptiste was 29 years old and living at La Pointe on Madeline Island and employed as a voyageur. In his household is 23 year old Margaret, 3 year old Lisette, and 5 month old Angelique Roy, presumably his wife and daughters.[1] In 1860, Jean Baptiste was recorded on the mainland in Bayfield Township in La Pointe County, though he is in his brother Vincent's household without his wife or children.[2]
