Biography

Anne was born in 1919. She is the daughter of John Rube and Elizabeth Bitter. [1]

Anne Rube was born in Sheboygan, WI, and was the second daughter born to Johannes Gottleib Rube and Elisabeth (Bitter) Rube. In 1922 and 1923, she worked in the sugar beet fields along with her family in Rocky Ford, Colorado. One sister, Lydia, passed away after only one month of life. In 1922, her grandparents, Johann Conrad and Katherina Bitter, and her Uncle Philipp Bitter, and three Bitter cousins died of disease and starvation trying to escape Russia [see their stories]

They moved to Fresno, California and purchased a 40 acre farm and rented another 80 acres across the street.

When her mother, Elizabeth Bitter Rube, died in 1940, she took care of the children until her father, Johannes Gottlieb Rube, remarried. Her stepmother [see "Brotherhood" under Johannes Gottlieb Rube] wanted complete control of her father and had him take Anne downtown and drop her off with just her suitcase on the corner across from the Free Evangelical Lutheran Cross Church in "Russian town (aka German town)" on the west side of Fresno, California. She stayed with her Uncle Georg "Shoemaker" Bitter in a room in back of the shoe shop.

During World War II, some of the brothers asked her to take care of their things and sent their money to her. All were surprised when they came home to find that she had saved their money for them, not used it to support herself as they expected.

She married August Sinner and had two daughters. August died leaving Anne to raise her daughters alone. She worked hard at several stores, including Gottschalks, to make ends meet.

For the past 7 years prior to her death, she stayed at the California Armenian Home in Fresno, California. She just celebrated her 96th birthday when she passed away at 8:25 am, Pacific Daylight Time, on 1 July 2015 at St Agnes Hospital in Fresno, California. She is survived by her daughters, a granddaughter, son-in-law, sole surviving brother and sister-in-law. She was preceded in death by her husband, August Sinner, and her grandson, Gregory Barker, and all her other brothers and sisters.

Anne's daughter June was with her at her last moments. According to June, Aunt Annie motioned June to move to the side as though someone was there and June was blocking them. No one was there, so June started asking questions and because Aunt Annie could only motion, not talk, she determined that Annie saw someone in the room with them. June started asking if a person was in the room. Yes to all her brothers and sisters who had already passed, but no to Uncle Pete who is still alive. Her family had come for her. Then she passed peacefully.

Slim Pickens [born Louis Burton Lindley, Jr. in Kingsburg, California in 1919] and Aunt Annie were friends. According to her daughter, Elizabeth, “he was the stagecoach driver in the movie "STAGECOACH" and he rode the bomb that dropped from the B-52 bomber in “DR STRANGELOVE”, as well as other movies and television shows. Pickens had a horse, and a donkey named "Democrat" that was the most ornery, defiant, animal known to man. But he kept the donkey so this big horse would have a friend. It’s possible that Democrat was in some movies with Slim. [My sister} June and I never got to meet him.”

Anne was a breast cancer survivor.
