Melanie Ruel was born in 1862 in Saint-Ferdinand, Canada East, to Germain Ruel and Julie Roy and baptized Marie Dévanie.[1] On the 1871 census, her name was given as Devanie.[2] Subsequent records have Melanie.
In 1881 in Saint-Ferdinand, Melanie married Philias Daigle.[3] The copy of the marriage record is faded and partly obscured. Philias's parents' names are not readable. Per the 1881 census, their names were Romuald Daigle and Césarie [family name not known]. Philias and Melanie lived with them and five of Philias's siblings.[4]
By 1891, Philias and Melanie had their own farm and six children.[5] They brought up 13 children in all.
Philias died in 1938 and was buried in the cemetery of St-Désiré in Lac-Noir, now part of Thetford Mines.[6] The record refers to Melanie as still living. The only record of death for Melanie comes from Find A Grave, which gives her year of death as 1946. Online records for St-Désiré and for the two Catholic churches in Thetford Mines end before that year.
