Biography

Robert Henry Ruff, son of Robert Ruff and Elizabeth Hall. He was baptised at Leytonstone, Essex just prior to emigration on August 13 1859. He arrived in Nelson with his family on the ship Golconda in December 1859. 1 Robert worked as a labourer in Nelson. In 1875, he married Mary Ann Cave and they raised a family of 8 children in their marriage. There were 5 daughters, Mary Ann Elizabeth, Ethel Hughes, Elsie May, Maude Catholina and Florence Elspeth. Their three sons were, George Whitman, Alfred Josiah (Joe) and Robert Charles. In 1882, Robert applied for a licence to drive passenger vehicles. Robert died after a long illness at his home in John Street, Nelson in 1901 age 55. He is buried at Wakapuaka cemetery.
