Clay Curtis Ruff was born on January 8, 1879 East Huntingdon, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, United States to parents Christopher Ruff and Lydia Strohm.
Clay worked as a teacher; eventually a college professor and he met then married Anna L. Cleaver on August 31, 1907 in the District of Columbia.[1]
According to the Selective Service System Draft Registration Card signed on September 12, 1918 Clay was described as "tall, slender (with) dark hair and brown eyes".[2]
Clay Curtis Ruff died on January 10, 1966 in Slippery Rock, Butler County, Pennsylvania and his body is interred there at East Side Cemetery.[3]

"Clay C. Ruff, 87, of 228 Franklin Street, Slippery Rock, PA, a retired instructor in the science department of Slippery Rock State College, died at 7 p.m. yesterday [Jan. 10, 1966] in Butler County Memorial Hospital. He was born in Ruffsdale, Pa., Jan. 8, 1879, to the late Christopher P. and Lydia (Strohm) Ruff. He attended Slippery Rock State Normal School and Franklin and Muskingum colleges. His graduate work was in science at Columbia University, the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Southern California. Mr. Ruff came to Slippery Rock to teach at the college in 1908 and held an instructorship until he retired in 1944. He was an active leader in religious education and civil affairs in the area, a member and elder of the Center United Presbyterian Church of Slippery Rock and served as church treasurer for many years. He was also secretary of the Elder's Association of the Butler Presbytery for many years. Active in Masonic orders, Mr. Ruff was a member of Grove City Lodge 603 F and AM, a charter member of the Valley of New Castle Consistory and held the 33rd Degree of Masonry. He was a member of the Royal Arch Chapter 273 of Butler Council 61, Lorain Commandery 87 and the Slippery Rock Cable-tow Club in which he served as secretary for many years. He was a member and former president of the Slippery Rock Rotary Club and a member of numerous professional science organizations. Surviving are a son, Dr. Curtis C. of Butler and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Anna (Cleaver) Ruff in 1959. Friends will be received at the Uber Funeral Home in Slippery rock from 7-9 today and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. tomorrow. A service will be held at 2 p.m. 2 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home with Rev. John Peterson of Center UP Church officiating. Interment will be in North Cemetery in Butler.
