Biography

James Russell was born in May of 1842 likely in Scott county Virginia per his recounting in his vital records, or alternately maybe in Botetourt county, according to his 1900 census records. His parents are given as William Russell and Sarah Huffman who married in Botetourt county but had moved to Scott county by the 1850 census.

James married Mahala Ferrell 24 March 1864. He has then a solidier on the Union side during the Civil War. ^[1]

In the 1880 census, James (age 37), Farm Hand, was the married head of household in Chapmansville, Logan, West Virginia, United States.^[2]

In the 1900 census, James (age 58), Farmer, was the married head of household in Sherman, Boone, West Virginia.^[3]

In the 1910 census, James (age 67), Own Income, was the married head of household in Winifrede, Kanawha, West Virginia, United States.^[4]

In the 1920 census, James (age 76) was the married head of household in Cabin Creek, Kanawha, West Virginia.^[5]
