Biography

Dorcas was born in 1800. She passed away in 1860.

DORCAS RUSSELL,^[1] b. at Bethel, 10 Mar 1800 daughter of Abraham and Sarah (Swan) Russell; d. at Portland, ME, 8 Jul 1860; m. about 1818, HIRAM ALLEN, b. at Berwick, 12 Sep 1795; Hiram d. at Portland, 12 Mar 1873.

Hiram Allen was a carpenter by trade. Hiram and Dorcas had their home in Bethel on the east side of what is now Church Street. The house was later moved to Main Street and became the Methodist parsonage. Hiram sold much of his property in Bethel in 1836 and 1839.^[2] Hiram and Dorcas were living in Portland by 1850^[3] where they both died.

Dorcas Russell and Hiram Allen were parents of eight children.

ii JUSTUS ALLEN, b. at Bethel, 22 Jan 1821; d. at Portland, ME, 15 Mar 1842.

iii SAMUEL ABBOT ALLEN, b. at Bethel, 21 Nov 1823; d. at Andover, ME, 2 Feb 1857; m. 14 oct 1854, MARTHA SWAN MERRILL, b. at Andover, ME, 1829 daughter of Ezekiel and Phebe V. (Farrington) Merrill; Martha d. at Andover, 9 Sep 1905. Martha married second Nathan Dresser son of Stephen and Abigail (Kilgore) Dresser. Samuel was a physician in Andover. He did not have children.

iv JAMES NEAL ALLEN, b. at Bethel, 18 Mar 1829; d. at Portland, 15 Mar 1842.

v ABIGAIL LEARNED ALLEN, b. at Bethel, 25 Jul 1832; d. at Unity, ME, 27 Nov 1904; m. 1st at Portland, 27 Oct 1851, CHARLES DANFORTH BRIDGES, b. about 1831; Danforth d. about 1865. Abigail m. 2nd at Portland, 10 Oct 1867, ANDREW J. HURD, b. at Unity, ME, 29 Jan 1815 son of Hiram and Parthenia (Pattee) Hurd; Hiram d. at Unity, 10 May 1891. Andrew was first married to Abigail Tripp in 1842.

vi HORACE WARD ALLEN, b. at Bethel, 28 Nov 1835; d. at Boston, 21 Jan 1882; m. at Boston, 18 Sep 1872, ABBY SARAH MOORE, b. at Whitefield, ME, 1844 daughter of Stetson and Margery (Dunton) Moore.^[4] Abby was first married to Frank Carlton.

vii ELIZABETH WALKER ALLEN, b. at Portland, 2 Feb 1839; b. at Portland, 21 Oct 1923; m. at Portland, 16 Dec 1866, as his second wife, CHARLES HENRI STARBIRD, b. at Portland, 24 oct 1821 son of George B. and Eliza (Beckett) Starbird; Charles d. at Portland, 20 Jun 1882. Charles was first married to Ellen S. Chase.

viii SARAH FRANCES ALLEN, b. at Portland, 6 Jun 1841; d. at Portland, 6 Jul 1919; m. at Portland, 10 Dec 1865, EDWARD WARREN PORTER, b. at Lancaster, NH, 20 Mar 1827 son of Warren and Selenda (Cram) Porter; Edward d. at Portland, 23 Jul 1904.
