Robert Francis Ruttledge, the son of Thomas Ruttledge and Mary Browne-Clayton, was born on 11 September 1899 at Erin Dale, townland of Mortarstown Upper, County Carlow, Ireland.[1][2]
He was educated at Marlborough College, Marlborough, Wiltshire, England. He was educated at Quetta Cadet College, India. He fought in the Waziristan Campaign in 1919. He was awarded the Military Cross (M.C.) in 1919.[3]
He married Mabel Rose Burke, daughter of William Creagh Burke and Kathleen Persse, on 8 September 1928 at Rathdown, County Dublin, Ireland. [4][5]

He retired from the military in 1939, with the rank of Major, late of the Poona Horse. He lived at Cloonee, Ballinrobe, County Mayo, Ireland.
Robert Francis Ruttledge died on 12 or 13 January 2002 at age 102 at Greystones, County Wicklow, Ireland.[6]
