Biography

Ann (Ryall) Barter was born in Dorset, England.

Ann Ryall was born about 1821 and was christened on 11 February 1821 in Folke, Dorset, England. [1] Her parents were John and Mary Ryall.

In the 1841 Census, Ann (aged 15) was living in Butterwick, Folke, Dorset, England with her parents John (65) and Mary (64) and her older siblings Thomas (25), John (20) and Sarah (18). [2] The whole family was born in Dorset.

Later that year in the June quarter 1841, Ann married William Barter in Dorchester, Dorset, England. [3]

The following year (1842), they had a daughter Caroline Jane Barter and another daughter Mary Ann Barter the next year. Mary died at 18 months, and a third daughter Mary Ann Jane Barter was born in early 1848 but also died before her first birthday.

In late 1848, Ann and William had a son Walter John Barter but he survived for less than a year. About 12 months later, Ann gave birth to another son who they also named Walter.

In 1851, Ann Barter (aged 30) was living in Holnest, Dorset, England [4] with her husband William Barter, a Farmer; and their two surviving children Caroline (aged 9) and Walter (aged 1), both born in Holnest, Dorset. Also in the household was William's mother Grace (aged 62 - a widow of independent means) and Edward Haget (aged 54) who was employed as an Agricultural Labourer.

In the 1861 Census, Ann and her husband William (aged 42 and described as a Retired Farmer) were living in Higher Holnest, Holnest, Dorset, England along with their children Walter (aged 11), Jane (aged 8), Alfred (6) and William (aged 4). [5] William's widowed mother Grace (aged 76) was also still living with the family.

By the 1871 Census, William (aged 48 and now employed as a Dairyman) and Ann (47) had now moved to Loders, Dorset, England. [6] Their sons Alfred and William who were employed as Agricultural Labourers, and John (aged 7), were still living with them.
