Biography

John was born in 1858 to Charles Ryan and Sarah Clarissa Whittlesey. After his mother remarried to Henry Franklin Severens, John would take on his name. Not clear if there was a formal adoption.

In 1860, 20 year old Carrie and husband Charles Ryan were living at Ridgeway in Orleans County, New York with son John (2) and infant daughter Kate. At the time Charles was a grocer in Ridgeway.[1]

In 1870, Carrie and H F Severens were living in Kalamazoo City where Henry was a lawyer with a net worth of $5,000.[2] Also in residence were:

  1. John Ryan - 12
  2. Kittie Ryan - 10
  3. Mabel Severens - 2
  4. Alice Hugh - 24 - domestic servant
  5. Kate Button - 22 - domestic servant

In 1873, John A Severens was attending Kalamazoo College in Kalamazoo, Michigan.[3]

In 1880, 22 year old John was living with his mother Carrie and step-father Henry Severens and was living on Potter Street in Kalamazoo where Henry was a lawyer. John was one of four children still living at home. He was working as a book-keeper.[4]

On September 7, 1887 at Detroit, Michigan, John Austin Severens married Nellie Bruce.[5]

Starting in 1884, John is identified as a superintendent with D M Ferry Co in Detroit, Michigan.[6][7]

In June of 1898 John A Severens applied for a passport for himself as well as his wife and daughter. He was described as 5'5" with blue eyes and dark brown and grey hair. He was 39 years old and a resident of Detroit. He gave his birth as September 26, 1858 at Medina, New York.[8]

He passed away on December 22, 1898 at Detroit. He was a resident of Pitcher Street in Detroit and at the time of his death at age 40 he was married and employed by D M Ferry Co. His parents were cited as Henry F Severens and Carrie Severens.[9] He was buried at Woodmere Cemetery in Detroit.

Probate was granted January 31, 1899.[10]
