Resource Notes

It appears that Patrick J. Ryan was a bit of a story teller. All of his records up to and including his marriage record all show his name as Patrick, and sometimes with a middle initial J that is presumed to be John. Later as his children were born or they married, the name he used was John P. Even later when he enlisted in the military during the American Civil War, his name evolved to Jackson P and he stated he was born in Burlington VT when in fact all previous records show he was born in Ireland. Most family documents seem to point to Limerick County Ireland as his birth place though he often said he was from County Cork. His several obituaries call him John Patrick /or Jackson, /or J.P. Ryan. Details of his life and family, that is based on his say-so is confusing and partially but not completely true. Therefore his life and genealogy are carefully presented using primary evidence and the preponderance of information. His military service is based on a letter received by Janice W Brown from the administration of the Old Soldier's Home in Tilton (New Hampshire) where he was known to have lived for many years. They verified his birth and death dates perfectly, associated him with 'Jackson P. Ryan' who had died at the home of his daughter Emma while away from the home on leave. His obituary and subsequent burial all corroborate this is the same person.
