Biography

Mary was baptised on 29 October 1570 at St Andrew Undershaft, London, the daughter of Richard Saltonstall.^[1]

She married Richard Sunderland on 14 February 1587/1588 at St Dunstan in the East, London.^[2][3] A marriage settlement had been signed a few days before.^[4]

Mary died in 1606 and was buried at Halifax on 12 May 1606. The register states: "Maria ux(or) Rich. Sunderland de Coley, generosi femina dilecta Deo dilecta marito" - Mary wife of Richard Sunderland of Coley, a gentlewoman beloved by God, beloved by her husband.^[5]

Research notes

Hopkinson calls her Susan, and Watson doesn't demur, though he also gives Johnston's alternative pedigree which calls her Mary.

Hunter also goes along with Susan, while noting that one of the pedigrees calls her Mary.

In fact both Visitation pedigrees of Sunderland call her Mary. The informants are her son and her grandson. Hunter is aware of this, so it's a puzzle why he doesn't prefer this evidence (though the unreliability of Hopkinson may have been much less apparent in his day).

Clay has nothing to add, since the burial register (24 Jan 1605/6) says only "Vid. Richard Sunderland Hal." (note - Mary's Richard Sunderland was still alive in 1606. Could this burial be Anne Rishworth Sunderland? Her profile shows burial 22 May 1565 but there is no burial in the register that date. There are 701 trees on Ancestry with that date - didn't check them all! - and the only two sources I saw on them were for burial on that date at Almondbury, Huddersfield, for Joannis Ryshworth of Marsden.)

She isn't mentioned in her father's will, but his daughter Susanna is evidently married to a William Browne.

She is named as Mary in the marriage settlement 9 February 1588.
