Emily Frances Sampson was born on Saturday 22 April 1865 at 6 Chistleton Road, Chester, England. She was the only daughter and last child to be born to Errick Sampson and his wife Mary Anne Francis. A Certified copy of birth entry dated 25th day of April 1985, is held in the files of Leigh Chester-Master[1]
Emily was almost six months old when her parents Errick Sampson and Mary Ann Francis, along with their three sons, Alfred, Harry and Frederick, embarked on the ship "Golden City" lying in the East India Docks, Blackwall, London, for a passage to Queensland, Australia. The ship stayed in the dock for two days before being tugged down to Gravesend on 22 October 1865. [2]
Emily's mother bcame ill on the voyage, and little Emily was left in the care of other women. Unfotunately, Emily became deaf in one ear due to her ear becoming 'fly-blown' while her mother was too till to care for her, and the other women failed to look after the baby properly.
The Sampson family including Emily were able to stand on solid land in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia on Monday, 5 February 1866. [3]
Emily met and married a friend of her brother Frederick's, John Campbell "Jack" Keillor, a Timbergetter. They were united in holy matrimony on Wednesday, 12 May 1866, in the Holy Trinity Church of England, Fortitude Valley, Brisbane. [4]
Emily and Jack Keillor were blessed with eight children.
The family lived at "Comrie" Upper Caboolture, Queensland where her husband Jack was engaged in Timbergetting and Mixed Farming from 1886-1936. [5]
Two sons were killed during WWI: Thomas Henry and Robert Errick Keillor.
Emily kept hives of bees at "Comrie" Upper Caboolture, something she learned from her own Sampson family. It was a skill and love that she would pass on to one of her sons Alex, and a grandson Robert.
On 12 May 1936, the family celebrated the golden wedding of Emily and Jack at the Upper Caboolture Hall, Upper Caboolture, Queensland, and the Silver Wedding of their eldest daughter Nell and Dick Gibbings. [6][7]
Two months later, Emily's husband of 50 years passed away on 27 July 1936.
Emily Frances Keillor, suffering from severe dementia, passed from this mortal realm on Thursday, 5 April 1945 at the Brisbane Hospital, Brisbane, Queensland, and was cremated the following day. [8][9]
An obituary appeared in 'The Telegraph' on Monday 30 April 1945.
