Biography

BIRTH:

A record of the birth of this Frank Augustus Sampson who was born July 6, 1894 in New Salem, Franklin, Massachusetts. This record says his parents were Samuel Sampson, Jr., a farmer born in Petersham, Massachusetts and Lidia Arabella (m.n.) Morris, born in Boston, Massachusetts.[1]

Obituary reiterates the accuracy of the source above.

EMPLOYMENT:

Birth records for his children, Lynn, Albert and "Loula" all says he was employed as a laborer. (1891 thru 1896).

1947 Obituary source said that when he died he was a "retired stonemason."

See 1880 US Census source that says he was employed "works on a farm," in 1880, (Kansas).

See 1900, 1910 and 1920 US Census sources that each say he was employed as a farmer during those years.

See 1930 US Census source that says in 1930 he was employed as a house carpenter.

MARRIAGE:

A record of the marriage of this Frank A. Sampson to Flora "J." (sic) Bliss says they were married January 1, 1883 in New Salem, Franklin, Massachusetts. Of this Frank, this record also tells us he was 18yrs old at the time and that his parents were Samuel and Lidia A, Sampson.[2]

In the 1900 US Census, Frank is given as a widower.

A record of the marriage of this Frank A. Sampson to Rachel H. Storms in Scottville, Mason, Michigan, October 11, 1904. Of this Frank, this record also tells us he was 40yrs old, married once before, born in Massachusetts, employed as an "engineer" and that his parents were Samuel Sampson and Lydia A. Morris.[3]

CENSUS':

The 1865 Massachusetts state census of New Salem, Franklin, Massachusetts finds this Frank A. at the age of 10-months old and given as born in New Salem, Massachusetts. He is living there in New Salem with his 33yr old father, Samuel Sampson, Jr., his 25yr old mother, Lydia A. Sampson, and two of his older siblings; 5yr old Charles A. Sampson and 3yr old George H. Sampson.[4]

The 1870 US Census of Benton Township, Fremont, Iowa finds this Frank at the age of 6yrs old and given as born in Massachusetts. He is living there in Benton Township, with his 37yr old father, Samuel Sampson, his 29yr old mother given by her middle name, Arabella and four of his siblings; 10yr old Charles, 8yr old George, 4yr old "Wm." and 7-month old Gemini.[5]

The 1880 US Census of Ionia, Jewell, Kansas finds this Frank at the age of 15yrs old and given as "works on a farm," born in Massachusetts. He is living there in Ionia with his 48yr old father, Samuel Sampson, his 40yr old mother, Lydia and three of his siblings; 14yr old Willie A., 10yr old Jennie and 5yr old Charlie.[6]

The 1900 US Census of New Salem, Franklin, Massachusetts finds this Frank A. at the age of 36yrs old and given as a "farm laborer" born in Massachusetts in June of 1863, (official birth record says July of 1864) and as a widower. He is living there in New Salem, with three of his sons; 16yr old Edward A. Sampson, 13yr old Leo T. and 8yr old Albert T. They are all living in the household of this Frank's 38yr old brother, George Sampson and his family, (wife Alice and sons George H and William J.).[7]

The 1910 US Census of New Salem, Franklin, Massachusetts finds this Frank A. Sampson at the age of 45yrs old and given as a "farmer", born in Massachusetts and in his 2nd marriage for 5yrs. He is living there in New Salem in a home he owns, with his 25yr old 2nd wife, Rachel H. and his (Frank's) 18yr old son, Albert J.[8]

The 1920 US Census of New Salem, Franklin, Massachusetts finds this person given as Frank "T." (sic) Sampson, born in Massachusetts. No age was entered. He is employed as a farmer and living on the farm he owns. He is living there in New Salem with his 35yr old 2nd wife, Rachel H., his 35yr old son, Edward A. and his 28yr old son, Albert J.[9]

The 1930 US Census of New Salem, Franklin, Massachusetts finds this Frank Sampson at the age of 66yrs old and given as a "house carpenter" born in Massachusetts who 1st married at age 18yrs old. He is living there in New Salem in a home he owns valued at $4,000 on East Main St. with his 45yr old 2nd wife, Rachel and two of his sons from his 1st marriage (not the marriage to Rachel), 39yr old Albert and 46yr old Edward.[10]

The 1940 US Census of Orange, Franklin, Massachusetts finds this Frank Sampson at the age of 75yrs old and given as born in Massachusetts. He is living there in Orange as head of household in a home he owns valued at $475 with his 51yr old son, George Sampson, George's 34yr old 2nd wife, Theresa and 52yr old boarder; George Hatstat. This record says Frank is married, though no spouse us included in the household.[11]

DEATH:

This Frank Sampson died August 14, 1947 in Franklin county hospital, Massachusetts, which was probably in Greenfield, Massachusetts at the time. See obituary below.

NEW SALEM

FRANK SAMPSON

Frank Sampson, 83, died early this morning in Franklin County hospital. He was born here July 6, 1964 (sic) (error in obituary in should have been 1864), the son of Samuel and Lydia A. (Morris) Sampson. He went with his family to Kansas when two and returned 12 years later. Except for a few years in Orange he has lived here since. he has been with his sons, Edward and Albert, many years. He is a retired stone mason.

Also surviving is a son, Leo, of Hawthorne. Edward and Albert live on Warwick Rd...Burial will be on New Salem hill.[12]
